Melvin Edwards Tomorrow's Wind

Doris C. Freedman Plaza
February 17 - May 31, 1991

About the Exhibition

Melvin Edwards (b. 1937, Houston, TX) is well-known for his juxtapositions of circular shapes and angular configurations. Tomorrow’s Wind can be viewed when facing north as a tilted disc angled toward a vertical projectile. When seen while facing south, the projectile and disc are abutted by a third plane surface that might suggest staircases or passageways. The stainless-steel sculpture has been freely polished to provide reflective surfaces that capture the colors, shapes, and changes of light in the surrounding environment. The elusive, transitory nature of the images evident in its mirrorlike finish provides a curious commentary when seen in conjunction with the massive strength of the piece itself.
