Jenny Holzer Sign on a Truck

Jenny Holzer (b. 1950, Gallipolis, OH) is the master of many voices. Author of such oblique truisms and one-line ideologies as, “There is a line between information and propaganda,” “Boredom makes you do crazy things,” and “Drama often obscures the real issue,” Holzer believes being heard is important. Holzer’s Sign on a Truck provides New Yorkers with an opportunity to have their preelection messages not only heard but seen—electronically enhanced through the aid of 27,000 electron tubes.

Sign on a Truck is a traveling road show and New Age soapbox. Organized and produced by Holzer, and delivered from the world’s largest outdoor color television, the Diamond Vision Mobile DV 2000—a giant, 12.5’ x 18’ color-video picture screen on wheels—Sign on a Truck is Holzer’s current high-tech confrontation with the problem of being heard. It is a combination of live camera interviews and preprogrammed five-second to five-minute visual, graphic, and audio statements by artists such as Ida Appelbroog, Leon Golub, Keith Haring, and Claes Oldenburg as well as other Holzer collaborators.

Live camera interviews will be conducted by guest MCs both days with spectators who have a preelection message they would like to get across in “grand style.”
