Martin Silverman A Night Out

Queens Library Plaza
December 29, 1983 - December 29, 1984

About the Exhibition

In Martin Silverman’s bronze sculpture, A Night Out, depictions of a man and a woman stand some three-and-a-half-feet high and are mounted on a pedestal. Silverman (b. 1950, New York City, NY) commented, “I find it is natural for me to work figuratively because my work explores human relationships. A Night Out shows the connection between a man and a woman—on a date—talking—dancing—embracing. I added red and blue patinas to this work because colors add an attractive and unusual edge to works in bronze.”

The work was commissioned by the Department of Cultural Affairs Community Arts Development Program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Under this program, the Public Art Fund was awarded a grant to produce this work of art to enhance the library plaza, which was recently renovated with Community Development Block Grant funds. The sculpture was executed in cooperation with the Downtown Flushing Development Corporation.
